Storing Your Un-built Stash
Damp and extremes of temperature are
detrimental to kits. The loft is out. It's very cold in winter, searing in
summer, dirty, and extremely damp during certain climatic conditions. Unheated rooms near to sources of water vapour are
also a no-no. So the spare room next to a bathroom is a non-contender for kit
storage. Your kits get cold in winter and every time the bath or shower is used
and the door opened, water
vapour condenses on the boxes, the decals and the instructions. Even kits
supposedly sealed in cellophane are at risk. They are not airtight.
A few years ago, my wife came up with a solution to the problem, motivated, I
suspect, by an
interest in re-gaining bedroom wardrobe space rather than preserving my un-built
stash!
Argos list a
"Set of 2 jumbo storage bags" at £4.99 (November 2004) in "Storage/bedroom",
catalogue number 875/0967. These are quality polypropylene clear-fronted bags
with a plastic zipper, size W 91cm, D 54cm, H 48cm and can accommodate a useful
number of kits.
They minimise rapid temperature fluctuations and exclude water vapour and dust. You
can see what you've got and keep it clean and dry. Surplus air can be expelled from part-filled bags. They work. Highly recommended.
