Jerry and his wife Anne live in the village of Epworth, between Lincoln and York in the UK, famous as the "Home of the Wesleys", founders of the Methodist movement. They moved here in 1977, three years after getting married. Their house was built in the 1790's to a tight budget on a modest smallholding and, nearly 200 years on, was a wreck. Living in the barn for six months, they gutted the place and re-built.
Physics trained, until July 2007Jerry taught science to 11 to 16 year-olds at South Axholme Community School. Situated in the village, the school serves the south of the Isle of Axholme, no longer an island but productive agricultural land thanks to the Dutch who drained the area some 300 years ago.
This is Jerry's lovely wife. Anne
has energy and is the driving force of the family, author of the
list of 'Jobs to do' and the annual "Management Plan" - complete with performance
indicators! This is traditionally written on New Year's Day in front of a
crackling log fire. The need for a plan was highlighted several years ago when
the lack of one resulted in an overwhelming glut of maintenance jobs which left
no time for leisure. Until July 2007 she taught a
reception class at an infant school in Scunthorpe, 12 miles away, loves
working in "her" large and ever-evolving garden and does
brilliant food. She also enjoys getting out on the mountain bikes on the local
bridleways.
The two resigned their increasingly difficult teaching jobs in the spring of 2007 and now run their own landscape maintenance business.
Rebecca,
the eldest child, born in 1984, has artistic talent, completed a degree
course in art and design in 2006 and is seen here stitching
curtains for the old touring caravan bought for her to entertain
her mates when she was a teenager. What good value for money that has proved to be! No
arriving home, cream-crackered after a day at work, to a living room full of
chilled-out bodies, and no disturbed late Friday nights as the youngsters return
from the local watering hole. Recommended!
Daniel, born 1987, started an English course at university in September 2005 but, finding this not to his liking, moved to drama. He is heavily into Capoeira and guitar. His modesty precludes the inclusion of an image.
Jerry started making plastic model aircraft round
about 1960. Back then there were only two serious manufacturers in his chosen
scale of 1/72, Airfix and Frog, and their range was tiny.
He chose this scale because the kits were
available in the local toy shop and, as a youngster, they were affordable. He stuck with it because it enables the largest aircraft to be displayed without
too much of a problem while the smallest can still be modelled without being
ridiculously microscopic.
Purpose-made
DIY pine
display cabinets adorn the dining room and landing. This guy has one indulgent
wife! Mind, the skills honed while constructing the display cabinets did lead to
the fitting-out of the kitchen with solid pine units constructed in-house!
And here's the man himself! Caught
enjoying one of his other main interests, the real thing. As labourer for the
landscape gardener wife, father of two children, teacher and 'He who
tries to do his fair share of the cooking, hanging out of washing, decorating
and maintenance', there is little time for model making. There is also the draw
of the Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster, enjoyed with a
very enthusiastic wife when all other obligations have
been fulfilled. Life is short yet there is so much to do!
